Yet another reason why we ALL must keep fighting for the same MARRIAGE rights, more importantly FEDERAL rights, that heterosexual married couples enjoy.
Gay and lesbian couples pay more in taxes because they do not receive any federal rights. Plus, even if the gay or lesbian couple is in a state that allows marriage (Massachusetts) or civil unions or domestic partnerships where they are recognized on the state level…they may be required to fill out MORE returns then normal. Not to mention, again, that they still don’t receive any federal rights or benefits.
If all of that wasn’t enough, if you provide your partner with health insurance through your job, you’re going to be taxed that amount as INCOME!
Folks, I’ve said for a long time that it’s awesome that some states have enough sense to END discrimination by allowing gays and lesbians to marry or have some sort of civil union or domestic partnership, but we can’t lose sight of that fact that EVEN with those states and even if EVERY state allowed us to marry WE STILL ARE NOT RECOGNIZED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT! We need to put an end to that…….the best way to start is to SPEAK UP BY VOTING!!!! When you walk into that voting booth, remember that you and your partner, EVEN if you live in a state where you can marry or have a civil union, are STILL DENIED OVER 1100 FEDERAL RIGHTS, BENEFITS and PROTECTIONS!
As of right now, the person that you love, cherish and care about…the person that you sleep next to every night, the person that takes care of your when you are sick, the person that you budget all of your finances with, the person that raises your children with you, the person that you buy and make a home with, the person that is your LIFE….is a complete stranger to you in the eyes of the Federal Government. REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU GO TO VOTE!!!! We need to start making things happen…….(please do me a favor and spend some time on BarackObama’s website if you haven’t already!)
